Underarms: The Fastest Area to Finish, and Why We Recommend It First
A version of this conversation happens in our consultation room most weeks. Someone sits down, tells us they want laser hair removal, and then adds the real constraint: they can’t do everything at once. Legs, underarms, bikini, maybe the face eventually. Where should they start?
Almost every time, we say underarms.
Not because it’s our most requested area, and not because it’s our most profitable. It is, per minute of laser time, our most expensive area and our smallest ticket. We say it because underarms are the cheapest possible way to find out whether laser hair removal is going to work on your body, on your skin, with our machine, before you spend real money.
What “fastest to finish” actually means
The underarm session itself takes about ten minutes, and roughly five of those are laser time. That part is covered on our underarm laser hair removal page along with pricing and prep.
But session length is not the number that matters when you’re planning. What matters is calendar time: how many months pass between your first appointment and the last one you actually need.
On paper, spacing is similar across areas. We run the first series 4 to 6 weeks apart no matter what we’re treating. The difference shows up in how many of those cycles you need.
Laser only damages a follicle that’s in its active growth phase. Follicles that are resting when the pulse hits them survive and grow back, which is the entire reason one session is never enough. So the useful question is: what fraction of the follicles in this area are awake on any given day?
Axillary hair does well on that measure. A photo-trichogram study of body hair across five skin sites, published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, found a higher percentage of follicles in the active growth phase on the armpit and leg in women, with axillary growth rates close to those of terminal scalp hair. Underarm hair is dark, coarse, densely packed, and biologically busy. That is close to a perfect description of what an Alexandrite or Nd:YAG pulse is built to destroy.
There’s a practical reason too, and it’s less scientific. The area is tiny. A technician can take her time and overlap every pass properly without the appointment running long. On a full back or a pair of legs, there’s a quiet pressure to move faster. Coverage on the underarm tends to be more complete simply because there’s less of it.
Most people finish in 6 to 8 sessions. Some with finer hair are done at 4. If you start in the fall, you are usually finished before the following summer.
The real reason we start people here
Here’s the part that’s slightly against our own interest to write down.
A single underarm session is $125. A six-pack is $550. A single full body session is $2,000. If you walk in and buy a full body package as your first laser purchase, you are betting a large amount of money on several things you have not tested yet: your own pain tolerance, how your skin reacts at the 48-hour mark, whether your hair responds at all, and whether this clinic is any good.
Underarms let you test all of it for $125.
By the end of your first session and the week that follows, you will know things you cannot learn from any website, including ours. You’ll know what the cryogen spray and the pulse feel like together. You’ll know whether you get folliculitis bumps afterward, and how long they take to settle. You’ll know whether the shedding happened in the 1 to 3 week window we told you to expect, which is the single clearest signal that the settings were actually high enough to do damage. And you’ll know whether we ran on time, whether we explained what we were doing, and whether you want to spend the next eight months in this room.
If any of that goes badly, you’re out $125 and one afternoon. That’s a much better position than being four sessions into a package you regret.
We would rather sell you the small thing first and earn the big thing later. That’s also why we don’t push the six-pack at the consultation if your hair looks like it will finish sooner.
Why the Chicago calendar favors starting now
There’s a seasonal argument for underarms that doesn’t apply to most other areas.
Treated skin has to stay out of the sun, and you can’t come in with a fresh tan or self-tanner. In Chicago that rule is trivially easy to follow between October and April and genuinely annoying in July. Underarms are also covered by clothing every day of the year, so if you leave with an hour of redness, nobody sees it and nothing in your week changes.
Compare that to legs. Full legs run about 45 minutes and $325 a session, and the whole point of doing them is to show them. Starting legs in June means either hiding them or compromising the treatment. Starting underarms in October means you’re done and smooth by the time anyone is wearing a tank top on the Brown Line platform.
If you want the full seasonal breakdown, we wrote about it in what to expect during laser hair removal in Chicago.
When we don’t tell you to start with underarms
The default is not a rule, and there are several consultations a month where we say something else.
If you have a wedding, a photo shoot, or surgery on the calendar, the deadline area wins. Work backward from the date, book the last session at least two weeks ahead so the shedding phase finishes cleanly, and start whichever area the deadline is attached to.
If your underarm hair is blonde, gray, red, or very fine, the laser has nothing to aim at. We will tell you this at the consultation rather than sell you six sessions that won’t work. Electrolysis is the right tool for light hair, and there’s an electrolysis practice in our building at 1317 N Larrabee.
If the hair that’s actually bothering you is on your face, treat your face. This comes up constantly with clients who have PCOS, where chin and jawline hair is the thing causing daily distress and the underarms are an afterthought. Starting with the area you think about every morning is worth more than starting with the area that finishes fastest. We covered the hormonal side of this in our post on laser hair removal for PCOS, and facial laser hair removal has its own page.
If you’re preparing for gender-affirming surgery, your surgeon’s template governs the treatment map, not our sequencing preference. Bring it in and we’ll work to it.
And if you already know you want full body and the budget is settled, there’s no reason to stage it. Sequencing is a tool for people with a constraint. If you don’t have one, skip it.
What underarms won’t tell you
Being honest about the limits of this advice: a good underarm experience does not predict everything.
It doesn’t predict Brazilian pain. The bikini line is the one area we treat that’s more sensitive than the underarm, and people who breeze through underarms are sometimes surprised. If Brazilian is where you’re headed, read the Brazilian page and expect a different experience.
It doesn’t predict session count on large areas either. Legs and arms carry finer, less dense hair over far more surface, and they generally take longer to reach the same reduction. Finishing underarms in five sessions is not a promise that legs will take five.
What it does predict, reliably, is whether your skin tolerates the machine, whether your hair type responds, and whether we’re competent. Those are the three things worth knowing before you spend more.
Frequently asked questions
I want full body eventually. Is starting with underarms wasting money? No, because underarms are part of full body anyway. You’re paying $125 to $550 for an area you were going to treat regardless, just earlier and separately. The only thing you give up is the per-area discount that comes with bundling, and most clients decide that’s a fair price for finding out whether laser works on them first.
How long before I know whether it’s working? Watch for shedding in the 1 to 3 weeks after your first session, when treated hairs push out of the follicle on their own. That’s the earliest real signal. Visible thinning usually shows up after the second or third session.
Can I add a second area to the same visit? Yes, and most underarm clients do because it saves a trip. Bikini is the most common pairing since it runs the same session length. We’ll price it at the consultation.
Does the time of year actually matter? For underarms, less than for other areas, since they stay covered year round. But the no-sun and no-self-tanner rules apply everywhere, and Chicago winters make those easy. Fall and winter starts finish before summer.
I had laser somewhere else and it didn’t work. Should I still start with underarms? That’s exactly the case we’d start there. Uneven results usually trace back to settings that were too low, often because the clinic’s machine wasn’t cleared for the client’s skin tone. Our GentleMax Pro Plus carries both a 755nm Alexandrite and a 1064nm Nd:YAG and is cleared for Fitzpatrick I through VI. Underarms are a cheap way to see whether the outcome is different with a machine that can actually run at the right energy. More on that in laser hair removal for darker skin tones in Chicago.
Book a free consultation
Every first-time client gets a free 20-minute consultation with a patch test before we treat anything. We look at your skin against the Fitzpatrick scale, check your hair color and medications, and give you a real session estimate and a real price. If we think laser is the wrong tool for you, we’ll say so.
Shave the night before or the morning of, skip deodorant and lotion that day, and wear a loose top. Our post on what happens if you don’t shave before laser explains why that first instruction matters more than people expect.
