Wedding in Nine Months? A Backward-Planned Laser Schedule for Chicago Couples
By Valeria Tartacovschi, cofounder, V&P Laser Hair Removal & Skin Care, Old Town, Chicago
Nine months out is the sweet spot, and almost nobody arrives at that number on purpose. They arrive because they got engaged, looked at the calendar, and started panicking in the right direction.
Here is the thing most couples get wrong when they call us. They count forward. Wedding is in June, it is now September, that is nine months, plenty of time. Then they book a consultation for late October because life is busy, start in November, and discover in April that they are one session short with a tan situation nobody planned for.
The schedule has to be built backward. You pick the date, subtract a buffer, and then count sessions in reverse until you hit today. If the count runs past today, you have a problem you can still solve. If it runs short, you have slack you can use for a second area.
Start from a cutoff date, not from today
Your last session should land at least two weeks before the wedding.
That number comes from shedding. After a session, the treated hairs do not vanish. They sit in the follicle and push out over the next one to three weeks, which can look like stubble growing back and often panics people who did not expect it. You want that finished, and you want any redness or folliculitis bumps settled, well before anyone photographs you.
Two weeks is the minimum. If your skin runs reactive, or if you are treating your face, three weeks is better.
So the first date you write down is not your start date. It is your cutoff.
The actual calendar
We space the initial series 4 to 6 weeks apart. Five weeks is our default, because it keeps the same weekday every time and makes rescheduling around a full calendar much easier.
Here is a real backward-planned schedule for a Saturday, June 5, 2027 wedding, at five-week spacing:
| Appointment | Date |
|---|---|
| Free consultation and patch test | Early September 2026 |
| Session 1 | Saturday, September 19, 2026 |
| Session 2 | Saturday, October 24, 2026 |
| Session 3 | Saturday, November 28, 2026 |
| Session 4 | Saturday, January 2, 2027 |
| Session 5 | Saturday, February 6, 2027 |
| Session 6 | Saturday, March 13, 2027 |
| Session 7 | Saturday, April 17, 2027 |
| Session 8 | Saturday, May 22, 2027 |
| Wedding | Saturday, June 5, 2027 |
Eight sessions, comfortably, with two weeks of buffer at the end. Most people need 6 to 9 for the reduction they are picturing, so nine months is enough to finish rather than enough to start.
Two notes on that table. Session 4 lands on New Year’s weekend, and holiday scheduling is the single most common place these plans slip. Move it a week either direction and everything downstream shifts with it, which is fine, because the spacing tolerates 4 to 6 weeks. What it does not tolerate is skipping. A missed session in December turns into a gap in January and you arrive in June one round behind.
The second note: this table assumes one area. Add a second area and the sessions stack into the same appointments rather than adding new ones, which is why we tell couples to decide their full list at the consultation rather than adding areas in March.
What “done” is actually going to look like
I want to set this expectation before you build a plan around it, because a wedding is the wrong occasion for a surprise.
You will not be hairless. After a full course, most of our clients land at 75 to 95 percent reduction. The hair that remains grows in finer, lighter, and slower, and most people find it invisible in photographs and easy to shave off the morning of. But it is not zero, and any clinic that promises you zero for your wedding is selling.
That ceiling is not a V&P limitation. A systematic review of controlled trials on laser and light hair removal found that efficacy improves with repeated treatments and that partial long term reduction beyond six months is supported by the evidence, while no evidence exists for complete and permanent removal. That is the honest state of the field.
Plan on shaving the morning of the wedding. Plan on it looking dramatically better than it would have. Do not plan on never picking up a razor again by June.
Deciding which areas, and in what order
Most couples have more areas on the wish list than budget or calendar. Sequencing solves that.
The rule we use: treat what the outfit shows, then treat what the honeymoon shows, then treat what you personally think about every morning.
For a sleeveless dress, underarms are the obvious first move and also the fastest area to finish. We wrote separately about why we recommend starting with underarms for anyone who wants the longer reasoning. Arms come next if the dress is strapless or the sleeves are sheer.
For the face, the timeline is tighter and the stakes are higher, because facial skin is what every photograph is aimed at. Facial laser hair removal is $225 for a full face and $125 for smaller areas like the upper lip or chin. Build in the three-week buffer rather than two.
Legs are a honeymoon decision more than a wedding decision, since the dress usually covers them. Full legs run about 45 minutes and $325 a session. If your honeymoon involves a beach, legs and bikini or Brazilian matter more than they do on the day itself.
And if the answer is everything, full body at $2,000 a session with package pricing is usually cheaper than assembling five areas separately. The session runs 90 to 120 minutes, so budget the calendar time as well as the money.
The tan problem nobody plans for
This is where wedding schedules break, and it is almost always the same two events.
We cannot treat tanned skin, and we cannot treat skin with self-tanner on it. The pigment in a tan competes with the pigment in the follicle for the laser’s energy, which is how burns and pigment changes happen. Our rule is no sun exposure and no self-tanner on the treatment area for two weeks before a session.
Now look at your calendar again. There is very likely a bachelorette or bachelor trip somewhere in there, and it is very likely in a warm place, because it is Chicago and the trip is in February. If that trip lands four days before a scheduled session, we are rescheduling you, and the reschedule pushes everything after it.
Build the trip into the plan from day one. Tell us the dates at the consultation. We will put your sessions on either side of it with enough clearance, and it will cost you nothing. Find out about it in February and it costs you a session slot you cannot get back.
The honeymoon has the reverse problem. If you are getting on a plane to somewhere sunny two days after the wedding, your last laser session needs enough distance that your skin is fully settled, and you need real sun protection on treated areas for the trip.
Spray tan for the wedding itself is fine, as long as it goes on after your final session and not before. Spray tan first, and we would have had to reschedule you.
The groom’s side
About half the couples who book with us treat one person. It is usually a mistake to assume it should be the bride.
Men book back, chest, and neckline work constantly, and the back is a genuinely practical wedding treatment because it is the one area you cannot manage yourself the week of. A full back is $375 a session and takes about 30 minutes. Neckline cleanup above a collar photographs better than a fresh razor line, which tends to show as irritation in close-up shots.
The same nine-month math applies. Same spacing, same two-week buffer, same tan rules. If both of you are treating, book adjacent appointment slots and you will make one trip instead of two.

If you have less than nine months
Nine is comfortable. Less than nine is a triage conversation, and the honest answers vary a lot.
At six months you can fit five or six sessions at five-week spacing. That is enough to reach meaningful reduction on a responsive area like underarms or bikini. Pick one or two areas rather than five, and expect to finish the course after the wedding.
At four months you get three or four sessions. You will see clear thinning and fewer ingrowns, and you will not be finished. This is still worth doing if the alternative is waxing the week of the wedding and risking a reaction, but go in understanding you are buying an improvement rather than a result.
At eight weeks or less, we would rather you not start. Two sessions will not change what the camera sees, and the last thing you want is a first-ever laser session on unfamiliar skin close to the date. Book your consultation for after the honeymoon and start the real course then.
Whatever the window, come in for the free consultation before you decide. We will tell you what is achievable in the time you have, including when the answer is that it is not worth your money yet.
Things that will derail an otherwise good schedule
A few conflicts show up specifically in wedding planning, because bridal prep routines collide with laser rules.
Waxing and threading have to stop six weeks before your first session and stay stopped for the whole course, because the laser needs the root in place. This catches people who have a standing brow or lip appointment they do not think of as waxing.
Retinoids need to come off the treatment area 14 days before each session. Bridal skincare routines are full of them, as are most chemical peels and many facials booked in the run-up. Coordinate with your esthetician rather than discovering the conflict at check-in.
Antibiotics also mean a 14-day pause, which catches people who get a dental procedure or a sinus infection in the middle of the series. Tell us and we will move the appointment.
We do not treat pregnant or breastfeeding clients. If a pregnancy is possible during the planning window, that is worth thinking about before you buy a six-pack.
And isotretinoin (Accutane) means waiting six months after your last dose. That one cannot be worked around.
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should I start laser hair removal before my wedding? Nine months is ideal, because it allows a full course of eight sessions at five-week spacing plus a two-week buffer before the date. Six months is workable for one or two areas. Under two months, we would recommend starting after the wedding instead.
Will I be completely hair free on my wedding day? No. Most clients reach 75 to 95 percent reduction after a full course, and the remaining hair grows in finer and lighter. Plan to shave the morning of. Anyone promising complete removal for a specific date is overselling.
Can I get a spray tan before my wedding if I am doing laser? Yes, as long as it goes on after your final laser session. Self-tanner and real tans both have to be off the treatment area for two weeks before any session, so schedule the spray tan for wedding week and your last laser session at least two weeks earlier.
My bachelorette trip is somewhere sunny. Does that ruin the plan? Only if we find out late. Tell us the dates at your consultation and we will schedule around it with clearance on both sides. Sun exposure within two weeks of a session means we reschedule, and reschedules are what push people past their cutoff date.
Can my partner and I book at the same time? Yes. We take appointments Monday through Saturday, 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and adjacent slots are usually available if you book the series in advance. Most couples treating together do it in one trip.
What if I miss a session in the middle of the series? The 4 to 6 week window has some tolerance, so one shifted appointment is fine. A skipped one is not, because it compounds. Call us and we will re-plan the remaining dates against your cutoff rather than letting the gap sit.
Book the consultation first
Every first-time client gets a free 20-minute consultation with a patch test before we treat anything. For wedding planning, bring your date, your bachelorette or bachelor trip dates, your honeymoon dates, and a rough list of areas. We will build the backward schedule with you and tell you honestly what fits.
Shave the treatment area the night before or the morning of each session. Full prep and aftercare are on our pre-laser hair reduction and post-laser hair reduction pages, and our post on redness after laser hair removal covers what is normal in the days after a session.
