How to shave for a Brazilian laser session without giving yourself razor burn

Shave 12 hours before your appointment, with a fresh blade, in the direction the hair grows, and put nothing on the skin afterward. That is the short version, and if you follow only that you will do better than most people who walk into our Old Town studio.

The longer version matters because the Brazilian is the one area where bad shaving technique does two things at once. It irritates skin that is already thin and folded, and it changes what we are allowed to do at your session. A client who arrives with a row of angry bumps along the bikini line is a client we either treat at lower energy or send home. Neither is what you paid for.

So here is how we ask people to do it, and why each part is there.

Shave the night before, not the morning of

Most guides say “shave 24 hours before” and leave it at that. We have landed on something tighter: the evening before an afternoon appointment, or the night before a morning one. Roughly 12 hours.

The reason is that you are balancing two clocks running in opposite directions. Freshly shaved skin has a disrupted barrier and a little inflammation, and that settles over several hours. But hair starts pushing back out almost immediately, and by 36 or 48 hours there is enough stubble above the surface to matter. Twelve hours puts you past the worst of the irritation and well before any regrowth.

Shaving in the car in the garage on Larrabee is the other end of the spectrum, and yes, people do it. Do not. Skin that was shaved 10 minutes ago is at its most reactive, and the cryogen spray on the GentleMax Pro Plus will find every nick.

Why we are strict about “smooth”

The laser is looking for pigment below the surface. Any hair sitting above the skin is pigment in the wrong place. It absorbs energy that was meant for the follicle, heats up, and burns on the surface. That is where the singed-hair smell comes from, and it is also where most of the surface irritation people blame on the laser actually originates.

Run the back of your hand over the area before you leave the house. If you can feel texture, go over it again. Seeing no hair is not the test. Feeling none is.

This is also why we do not shave you ourselves. Some clinics do. At $225 a session we would rather spend those minutes on the treatment, and frankly nobody maps their own hair growth better than you do.

The razor, and an honest contradiction

Use a fresh blade, or one with no more than two or three shaves on it. A dull blade drags, and dragging is what tears the follicle opening and starts the bump cycle.

Skip the five-blade cartridges if you are prone to bumps. The reason is specific. Multi-blade razors work by lifting the hair and cutting it below the skin line, which leaves a sharp tip sitting under the surface. DermNet’s overview of pseudofolliculitis barbae describes exactly this mechanism, and notes that it happens in the pubic area, not just the beard, and that it is more common with blade razors than electric shavers. Once healed, those lesions can leave hyperpigmentation and sometimes scarring.

Now the contradiction I promised, because I would rather name it than pretend it does not exist. Dermatology guidance for preventing razor bumps says to leave about a millimetre of stubble and avoid shaving the same patch twice. Our prep instructions say get it smooth. Both are correct for their own purpose, and they genuinely conflict.

The way out of it is the treatment itself. You need to shave this closely six to eight more times, spaced four to six weeks apart, and then you are largely done shaving here at all. That is the trade. If you are someone whose skin reacts badly to every close shave, tell us at the free consultation and we will talk about it honestly rather than handing you a list.

Direction, tension, and pressure

Three things, and direction is the one people get wrong.

Shave with the grain. In the Brazilian area the grain changes more than anywhere else on the body. Above the pubic bone it usually runs downward. Along the labia it can run in almost any direction and often changes within a couple of centimetres. The strip between the buttocks tends to grow inward toward the midline. You cannot shave the whole area in one direction and expect a good result, which is why this takes longer than shaving your legs.

Do not pull the skin taut. Stretching gives you a shave below the skin line, which is the same problem as the five-blade razor. DermNet suggests keeping your free hand behind your back while shaving the face to resist that temptation. That is not practical here, but the principle holds: let the skin sit where it sits.

Use short strokes and almost no pressure. Let the blade do it. If you are pressing, the blade is dull.

Order of operations

Warm shower first, and stay in it for a few minutes before you start. Warm water softens the hair and makes it easier to cut cleanly. This is the single easiest improvement most people can make.

Shave last, after washing. Then nothing else. No exfoliating scrub that day, no retinoid on the area for a week beforehand, no self-tanner for two weeks.

Use an unscented gel or a plain glide, and skip anything with menthol, fragrance, or a cooling agent. Those products feel soothing and then sensitise the skin, and sensitised skin means we drop your settings. Lower settings means slower progress, which means more sessions.

After the shave: clean, dry, bare. That means no lotion, no oil, no powder, no deodorant near the groin, and no numbing cream. We do not use numbing cream at all here, partly because the cooling on the GentleMax Pro Plus makes it unnecessary and partly because it masks the sensations we need you to feel and report during treatment.

The awkward part, handled practically

The perineum and the perianal strip are the two spots people miss, and they get missed for obvious reasons.

A handheld mirror helps more than a bathroom mirror. One foot up on the edge of the tub gives you a better angle than standing. Do those two areas last, when the blade is already wet and the skin is already warm, and go slowly enough to feel where the hair is pointing rather than guessing from the mirror.

If you cannot reach something, leave it. We will work around a missed patch, and a small unshaved spot costs you far less than a cut does.

Come in with razor burn and here is what happens

I want to be straightforward about this because people worry about wasting an appointment.

Superficial redness that has faded by morning is usually fine. We check the area before every session anyway, and mild pinkness that is already resolving rarely changes anything.

Active inflamed bumps, pustules, or broken skin are different. Treating over inflamed follicles on the Brazilian raises the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and that risk is highest on the skin tones we are most careful with, which is exactly where we use the 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength. In that situation we either treat around the affected patch at reduced energy or move your appointment. We would rather move it.

Things that mean you should call us rather than come in: broken or weeping skin, anything that looks infected, a fresh sunburn or a new tan on the area, or a wax or pluck in the last six weeks.

That last one is the rule people break by accident. Between sessions you can shave as often as you like. You cannot wax, pluck, thread, or epilate, because those remove the root the laser needs to find.

Mistakes we see most often

An electric trimmer instead of a razor. Trimmers leave a very short stubble that still reads as surface hair to the laser.

Depilatory cream in the days before a session. It is chemically irritating and leaves the barrier compromised right when we need it intact.

Shaving three days early because it fit the schedule better. By appointment day there is measurable regrowth, and the session is less effective than it should have been.

Scrubbing the area the morning of, on the theory that exfoliating helps. Save that for a few days after, once the treated hairs start to shed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I shave the morning of my appointment? If that is the only window you have, yes, but give yourself several hours and be gentle. The night before is better.

Does it matter if I shave in the shower or at the sink? The shower, because of the warm water. Just do not do it in a hurry at the end.

I have hair too dense to shave cleanly the first time. What then? Trim it down with scissors or a trimmer a day or two earlier, then shave properly the night before. Trying to take very dense hair off in one pass with a razor is how people cut themselves.

Can I get my Brazilian session during my period? Yes. It does not affect how the laser works. Some clients prefer to wear a tampon for the labial portion. Sensitivity can run a little higher in the first few days of a cycle.

What if I am prone to ingrown hairs no matter what I do? Say so at your consultation. Ingrown hairs in this area are usually the reason people come to us in the first place, and they tend to improve substantially once the density drops after a few sessions.
