Back Waxing vs Back Laser in Chicago: A 12-Month Cost and Pain Comparison From Real Clients

V&P Laser Hair Removal & Skin Care — 1317 N Larrabee St, Chicago, IL 60610 — (252) 557-7113

Almost every guy who books a full back with us has waxed it at least once. Usually more than once. And almost all of them ask the same thing while they’re lying face-down on the table: “Why didn’t I just do this years ago?”

The honest answer is that laser costs more up front, and waxing feels like the cheaper choice until you add up a year of it. So we did the math. This is a real 12-month comparison of back waxing versus back laser hair removal for a Chicago man, using our published prices and the going rate at waxing salons around Old Town, Lincoln Park, and River North. We also compared the part nobody puts on a price sheet: how much each one hurts, and for how long.

I’ll say up front that we do laser, not wax, so we have a side in this. But the numbers are the numbers, and we’ll show our work.

What a year of back waxing actually costs in Chicago

A full back wax in Chicago runs about $55 to $80 at most salons, with the busier River North and Gold Coast spots landing at the top of that range. Call it $65 as a fair middle.

Back hair grows back enough to wax again every three to four weeks. To wax, you have to let it grow out first, which is its own problem we’ll get to. On a four-week cycle, that’s 13 appointments a year. On a three-week cycle, which is what a lot of guys with coarse hair actually need to stay smooth, it’s about 17.

At $65 a session, a year of back waxing costs somewhere between $845 and $1,105. Round it to roughly $1,000 for a typical year. Add tip, and add the occasional ingrown that gets bad enough to need a visit, and you’re over that.

And here’s the part that matters: at the end of that year, you have exactly the same amount of back hair you started with. You’ve rented smoothness for 12 months. Next year the bill resets.

What a year of back laser costs at our Chicago clinic

A full back at V&P is $375 for a single session, or $2,050 for a package of six. Every price is published on our laser hair removal Chicago prices page, so you can check this against what we’re saying.

Laser sessions are spaced about six weeks apart, because the laser only works on hair that’s in its active growth phase and you have to wait for the next batch of follicles to cycle in. So in a 12-month stretch you’d fit in most of a full course. Most backs reach 75 to 95 percent reduction somewhere between six and nine sessions, which for a lot of clients is roughly a year to a year and a half of treatment total.

So your first year of laser costs around $2,050 for the six-pack, maybe a little more if your hair needs a session or two beyond that. That’s double what you’d spend waxing that same year.

Then year two happens. And this is where the comparison stops being close.

Year two, three, and the rest of your life

Waxing year two: another $1,000. Year three: another $1,000. It never stops, because waxing never removes anything permanently. It pulls the hair out and the follicle grows it right back.

Laser year two: most clients are done, or close to it. Maybe one touch-up session if a patch decides to come back, which runs $375, and plenty of people don’t need even that. Some come in once a year for maintenance, some never return because the reduction held.

Run it out five years. Waxing costs roughly $5,000. Back laser costs roughly $2,050 to $2,800 all in, and after that you mostly stop thinking about your back hair, which was the whole point.

The break-even is around the two-year mark. Everything after that, laser is just cheaper, and you’re not spending a Saturday every three weeks getting hot wax poured on you.

Now the part nobody quotes you: the pain

Cost is easy to put on a chart. Pain is the thing people actually flinch about, and it’s where these two are genuinely different.

Waxing a back is a hard rip across a wide area, and the back has a lot of surface. The wax grabs the hair and the top layer of skin and pulls, all at once, strip after strip. Most guys describe the first few strips as sharp and the rest as a dull burn that builds. It’s over in about 20 to 30 minutes, but you feel it the whole time, and the skin stays red and tender for a day or two after. Ingrown hairs show up a few days later, especially on coarse hair, and on a back you can’t reach them to do anything about it.

There’s also the grow-out. To wax, the hair has to be about a quarter inch long, so you spend the week before your appointment with a back full of stubble under your shirt. Then you’re smooth for maybe ten days. Then it starts again.

Laser feels different. Most people describe each pulse as a quick snap, like a rubber band flicked against the skin. We run the Candela GentleMax Pro Plus, which sprays a burst of cooling on the skin with every single pulse, so the heat doesn’t build the way wax does. A full back session takes about 30 to 45 minutes, and the sensation stays at “snap,” not “burn.” Afterward the skin looks a little pink, like mild sun, and it settles within a few hours to a day.

The bigger difference is the direction of the pain. With waxing, every session hurts the same because you’re pulling out a full crop of hair every time. With laser, it gets easier as you go, because there’s less and less hair for the laser to target. By session five or six, a lot of clients say they barely feel it. The back is one of the easier areas to sit through anyway, since it’s not sensitive skin the way the face or bikini line is.

And you don’t have to grow anything out. For laser you shave the back the night before or the morning of. Show up smooth, leave smooth, no stubble week.

When we tell people to wax instead

We’re a laser clinic, but we don’t book everyone who walks in. Laser works by targeting pigment in the hair, so it needs dark hair to lock onto. If your back hair is blonde, red, gray, or very fine and light, the laser has nothing to grab, and we’ll tell you that at your free consultation instead of selling you six sessions that won’t do much. For that hair, waxing or electrolysis is the more honest route. We happen to share our building with an electrolysis clinic, so we can point you next door if that’s the better fit.

For the coarse, dark back hair that most guys are trying to get rid of, though, laser is the treatment that actually solves it.

Getting your back done in Chicago

We’re at 1317 N Larrabee St in Old Town, on the Near North Side. Clients come to us for back treatments from Lincoln Park, which is about five minutes north, along with the Gold Coast, River North, West Loop, and West Town, all within about a ten-minute drive. There’s free street and garage parking by the building, and the Sedgwick Brown Line stop is a four-block walk.

Every first-time client gets a free 20-minute consultation. We look at the area, run a small patch test if your skin tone calls for it, and give you a real treatment plan and a real price for your back, whether that’s the full back or just the upper or lower back. No pressure, no package you don’t need.

If you want the full breakdown before you come in, our back laser hair removal page lists every back option and what it costs. Or call us at (252) 557-7113. We’re open Monday through Saturday, 8 AM to 8 PM.

The first year, waxing is cheaper. Every year after that, it isn’t, and you’re still growing the hair out every three weeks. That’s the whole comparison.
