Legs in Chicago: Session Length, Cost per Square Inch, and Why Winter Is the Right Start
Full legs are $325 a session, which is the second largest number on our price list. People see it and assume legs are the expensive area.
By the only measure that actually compares one area to another, legs are the cheapest thing we sell. It is not close.
The cost per square inch math
Nobody in this industry publishes price per unit of skin, which is strange, because it is the only way to tell whether an area is priced fairly.
To do it you need a rough surface area for each region. The standard clinical tool for that is the Wallace Rule of Nines, used by emergency and burn clinicians to estimate what percentage of total body surface a burn covers. It assigns 18% to each lower extremity measured all the way around, 18% to the posterior trunk, 9% to the head, and about 0.5% to a palm.
Take an adult body surface area of 1.7 square meters, which is a reasonable midpoint. That works out to roughly 2,600 square inches of skin in total. From there:
| Area | Price per session | Rough treated area | Cost per square inch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full legs | $325 | about 900 sq in | about $0.36 |
| Full body | $2,000 | about 2,000 sq in | about $1.00 |
| Full back | $375 | about 340 sq in | about $1.10 |
| Underarms | $125 | about 40 sq in | about $3.10 |
| Full face | $225 | about 60 sq in | about $3.75 |
Legs come out roughly ten times cheaper per square inch than underarms and face.
These are estimates and I want to be clear about that. Surface area varies with height and build, our leg pricing covers thighs and lower legs, and the Rule of Nines is a field approximation rather than a precise measurement. But the ordering is not close enough for the estimation error to change it. Whatever your body, legs are the best value per unit of skin on the price sheet, and six-session package pricing lowers it further.
Every published price we charge is on the Chicago laser hair removal prices page if you want to run the math yourself.
Why the cheap number is not a discount
The price reflects what the treatment actually costs us in time, and legs are efficient for a specific technical reason.
The GentleMax Pro Plus runs spot sizes up to 24mm. A 24mm spot covers about 0.7 square inches of skin per pulse. Cover 900 square inches with roughly 15% overlap and you are firing somewhere around 1,400 to 1,500 pulses on a pair of legs.
That sounds enormous. At the machine’s repetition rate it is about two to twelve minutes of actual firing, depending on how fast we run it. The rest of the 45-minute appointment is positioning, repositioning, checking skin response, and the fact that legs have to be treated from four angles.
Contrast that with a face. Small contoured areas need small spots, and small spots mean more pulses per square inch and slower, more careful work around the lip, the nostril, the jawline. That is where the cost per square inch goes.
Legs are flat, uncontoured, and forgiving. They take the biggest spot the machine has. Big spots also reach deeper, for reasons we explain in our post on reading your own treatment settings, so the efficiency is not a compromise.
What 45 minutes actually looks like
You shave the night before or the morning of, both legs, front and back, with a fresh razor. This is not a small task and I will come back to it.
At the clinic you change, and we position you face up first. Front of thighs, knees, shins, ankles. Then you turn over for the backs of the thighs and calves. We check skin response as we go and adjust rather than running one setting across the whole area, because thigh skin and shin skin do not behave identically.
You can drive yourself home and go back to work. Skip the gym, hot showers, saunas, and hot tubs for the first 24 hours, since sweat and heat in freshly treated follicles cause irritation.
Full prep and aftercare are on our pre-laser and post-laser pages.
Legs usually take more sessions than people expect
Here is the honest counterweight to all of the above.
Leg hair is generally finer and less densely packed than underarm or bikini hair. The laser targets pigment, so coarse dark hair in a small area responds fastest. Fine hair spread over a large area is the harder case.
Our expectation for legs is six to nine sessions to reach the 75 to 95 percent reduction range, versus six to eight for underarms, with some people finishing sooner and hormone-driven growth taking longer. Sessions run 4 to 6 weeks apart in the initial series.
So legs are the best value per square inch and often the longest commitment in absolute sessions. Both things are true. If you want the fastest possible finish rather than the best value, we make the case for starting with underarms instead.
Why winter is the right start in Chicago
This is the argument that matters most for legs specifically, and it is stronger here than for any other area we treat.
You cannot come in with a tan or with self-tanner on the treatment area. Pigment in tanned skin competes with pigment in the follicle for the laser’s energy, which is how burns and pigment changes happen. Our rule is no sun exposure and no self-tanner on the area for two weeks before each session.
Now consider what legs are for. They are the area you most want to show in summer, and therefore the area most exposed to sun in summer. The treatment window and the display window are in direct conflict, and legs are where that conflict is sharpest. Nobody tans their armpits.
Run the calendar. Six sessions at five-week spacing spans about seven months. Start in October and your last session lands in late April or early May. Start in June and you spend the summer either avoiding sun on your legs or rescheduling.
There is a second reason. After a session you need to keep the treated area out of the sun while it settles. In February that requires nothing from you, because your legs are under clothes anyway. In July it means covering your legs for weeks at a time, which defeats the purpose of the treatment you just paid for.
The honest caveat: a winter vacation somewhere sunny creates exactly the same problem as a Chicago July. Tell us your travel dates at the consultation and we will schedule around them. Our post on backward-planning a schedule around a date covers how to build the calendar when you have a fixed deadline.
Winter skin is also drier, and a compromised barrier is worth mentioning. Moisturize between sessions, skip the retinoids on your legs for two weeks before each appointment, and do not exfoliate the day before.
Full legs or lower legs only
Worth thinking about before you book, because it changes the math.
Lower legs, knee to ankle, are where most people’s visible hair growth is heaviest and where shaving irritation concentrates. If budget is the constraint, lower legs alone deliver most of the practical benefit for a fraction of the cost.
Full legs make sense when thigh hair genuinely bothers you, when you wear shorter hemlines, or when you are already planning several areas and the per-visit economics favor doing more in one appointment.
We will give you an honest read at the consultation. If your thigh hair is fine and sparse, we will tell you that lower legs are probably enough rather than selling you the larger package.
About shaving 900 square inches the night before
This is the part people underestimate, and it is the most common reason a leg appointment goes badly.
The skin has to be smooth. Any hair left above the surface absorbs energy at the surface instead of conducting it down to the follicle, which produces surface irritation, the smell of burning hair, and less effect where it counts. Our post on what happens if you don’t shave before laser covers the mechanics.
Practically: use a fresh blade, do it the night before rather than in a rush that morning, and pay attention to the backs of the knees and the ankles, which are where people miss. If you find a patch you missed, tell us and we will work around it rather than treating over stubble.
You can shave as much as you like between sessions. What you cannot do is wax, pluck, thread, or epilate, because the laser needs the root in place.
Frequently asked questions
How much does laser hair removal on legs cost in Chicago? At V&P a full legs session is $325 and takes about 45 minutes. Six-session packages are priced lower per session. Full pricing for every area is published on our prices page.
How many sessions do legs take? Six to nine for most people to reach 75 to 95 percent reduction, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart in the initial series. Legs often take slightly more sessions than smaller, coarser-haired areas because leg hair tends to be finer.
Is it better to do laser hair removal on legs in winter? In Chicago, yes. You cannot be treated with a tan or self-tanner on the area, and treated skin needs to stay out of the sun afterward. Both rules are easy to follow between October and April and difficult in summer. A fall start also finishes the course before the following summer.
Are legs expensive compared to other areas? Per session, they are among the higher numbers. Per square inch of skin treated, they are the cheapest area on the price list by a wide margin, roughly ten times cheaper than underarms or face.
Should I do full legs or just lower legs? Lower legs alone are often enough if that is where your visible growth and shaving irritation are concentrated. Full legs make sense if thigh hair bothers you or you are combining areas. We will give you a straight recommendation at the consultation.
Do I have to shave my legs before the appointment? Yes, both legs, front and back, the night before or that morning, with a fresh blade. Hair above the skin surface absorbs energy where it does no good and causes irritation. Shaving between sessions is fine. Waxing and plucking are not.
